Plot[]
The episode starts with Ranboo chained to a chair and connected to an electric shock machine. The Puzzler appears on the TV in front of him and welcomes him to "the game". He has to find the correct key to unlock himself from the chains. The audience helps him locate the key, and he frees himself.
He walks down a corridor and finds Charlie on an operating table. The Puzzler instructs him to perform surgery to find a key to unlock the next room. Ranboo, distressed, reluctantly cuts Charlie open, finding out he is made of slime, and removes various objects from inside him. The Puzzler returns on the TV, telling Ranboo he never said to perform surgery and that the next clue was on Charlie. The clue turns out to be a tattoo of a toilet on Charlie's arm, leading Ranboo to find the key in a toilet nearby.
Ranboo unlocks the next room, finding Ethan, Austin, Sneeg, Niki, Vinny and Frank all chained to a carousel. The Puzzler arrives with his two companions, Valkyrae and Sykkuno, and explains Ranboo must choose who survives. Each chained character takes turns pleading their case to Ranboo. The Puzzler brings Charlie into the room and digs through his stomach. He finds a hat which he then places on Sneeg's head, and this causes the stream to start glitching as Sneeg frantically looks around, breathing heavily. He quickly makes up an excuse and is untied and allowed to leave. Sneeg is caught and restrained by people in Showfall Media masks, and they put a mask on his face to calm him. He then robotically sits back down on the carousel. They replace the mask with a new hat, and he re-introduces himself.
Niki is chosen by the audience vote and allowed to join Ranboo in the next room. Ranboo also gets to choose someone and picks Sneeg. Sneeg tries to take Frank with him, so The Puzzler kills Frank. The party then goes through a series of puzzles, including assembling a game of Mouse Trap and navigating through a laser maze. One by one, the newer characters are killed off and left behind. In the last puzzle room, The Puzzler accidentally drops his detonation remote while explaining the game, and the TV signal cuts out.
Entering the final room alone, Ranboo discovers The Puzzler's remains. He also finds a recording left for him, instructing him to find a key to escape and that "the truth will set [him] free". Hetch hacks into the TV screens in front of Ranboo and appears again. The screen starts glitching again, and Hetch tells Ranboo he is in a show and has been a puppet. Hetch frees Ranboo from the mind control, shutting his mask off. Ranboo breaks the fourth wall, now aware that he's on a production set, and looks around. He exits the set and finds himself in an abandoned mall. The screen fades to black and then displays "The Story Concludes..." with the broadcast date for The Choice.
Trivia[]
- The episode poster was made by Kertoir[3].
- Most of this episode is a parody of the Saw franchise[6]:17:52, with The Puzzler being a ripoff of Jigsaw[6]:20:00. Direct references include the carousel, the surgery, and the rat masks.
- The original idea for Valkyrae and Sykkuno's characters was for them to be detectives and parody Saw's cop plot. However, when given the choice between this and being rats, they were more comfortable playing rats[7]:31:23.
- Jerma was a co-writer/creative consultant for a large part of this episode[8]:1:47:43. It was his idea for the key puzzle to work first try and also to have the party play Mouse Trap[6]:21:02. He also had an additional unused idea for a living room with the gag being for The Puzzler to introduce it as an Airbnb[8]:2:02:43.
- In the Puzzlers appearance in the box after the TV breaks it is played off as a joke that the Puzzler is too short. But the box was built with the wrong measurements so the Puzzler had to improvise after being too short.
- The candy room is a reference to Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, notably the lickable wallpaper[6]:19:22.
- The instructions for Mouse Trap were written in Wingdings[9]:2:15:52. Squiggles also used Wingdings to give hints to the audience[9]:2:16:39. His messages said "Ah it's simple you just have to find the cage", "The cage was in Charlie remember?", "Another piece is in a jar of something sweet ;)" and "The last one comes at a price :/".
- In the wardrobe room, Sneeg spelled out "DEAD" using the fridge magnets[5]:1:34:38.
- When The Puzzler asks the party to turn around for the third time, Ranboo can be seen tapping out SOS with his left hand before reaching across with his right hand to stop it[5]:1:42:02. He is also staring directly at Ethan, foreshadowing his death[6]:1:40:00.
- In the toy room, the first board game Ranboo picks up is called "Maul of America". This was intentional foreshadowing for the ending scene facility reveal[7]:1:27:34.
- Ranboo solved a Rubik's cube in the toy room because he used to participate in speed cube competitions and can solve one in under 20 seconds[10]:2:56:34.
- The hole in the wall puzzle is a reference to Ranboo's favourite MC Championship minigame of the same name[10]:3:00:48.
Behind the Scenes[]
The Puzzler saying "It's a bad day to be a cheesecake" was an inside joke that originated at the cast and crew dinner the night before. The dessert was cheesecake and one of the producers was silent for 15 minutes and then suddenly said "it's a bad day to be a cheesecake"[9]:1:57:50. Jerma decided to say it in an attempt to get someone to break character, and when saying it, he looked directly at Niki Nihachu, who had laughed the hardest the night before[8]:2:04:36. Jacob Komar even stayed up until 1am printing out a shirt with the joke on it[9]:2:01:07[10]:48:27[11][12].
During the first three rooms of the episode, Jerma's earpiece malfunctioned and he did not have any cues. Charlie had to help and tell him that the audience had picked Niki as he genuinely did not know[8]:1:56:11. Also, he did actually break the door in the wardrobe room by trying to go through it[8]:1:53:17.
Patient Charlie being brought into the carousel room[9]:2:02:42 and Sneeg having the hat placed on his head were post-rehearsal additions to the show[9]:2:05:43.
There was supposed to be a third pipe puzzle for Vinny to travel through the tunnel but due to a miscommunication, he was directed through the tunnel before the minigame was put on screen[9]:2:20:42.
It took Ranboo over 40 minutes of attempting to throw the slime towel onto the laser machine before the team had to resort to using fishing line to pull the towel towards him and reverse the footage in post[10]:2:06:16.
